But can we truly solve philosophical problems without understanding their historical context? Are the questions that occupied philosophers of the past disconnected from today\u2019s concerns?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This seminar examines Kant\u2019s&nbsp;<em>Critique of the Pure Reason<\/em>, a rare text referenced by both continental and analytic traditions. What aspect of this 1781 classic bridges these seemingly opposing schools of thoughts? The key lies in the epistemological question central to the&nbsp;<em>Critique: How is synthetic a priori judgment possible<\/em>? This question can be reinterpreted through the lens of philosophy of language as:&nbsp;<em>How is objective meaning possible?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We will explore the&nbsp;<em>Critique of Pure Reason&nbsp;<\/em>as addressing a central issue in modern philosophy\u2014the semantic problem:&nbsp;<em>How can language refers to the world?<\/em>&nbsp;Drawing on interpretations by analytic philosophy, we will revisit Kant\u2019s question and critically evaluate early analytic philosopher\u2019s critiques of his answers. Through this, the seminar seeks to uncover constructive intersections between early modern and contemporary philosophy, as well as between continental and analytic traditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2.&nbsp;Targeted Audience<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Anyone who would like to read\u00a0<em>the Critique of the Pure Reason<\/em>\u00a0at least once in a lifetime<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Students and Researchers who are interested in Kant\u2019s philosophy, epistemology, and philosophy of language<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Students and Researchers who are pondering upon the contemporary significance of early modern philosophy<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Structure of The Seminar<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Following\u00a0<em>Kant and the Foundation of Analytic Philosophy<\/em>\u00a0by Robert Hanna, interpret the content of\u00a0<em>the Critique of Pure Reason<\/em>. And examine the critique to Kant by early analytic philosophers.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>This is not a reading seminar which read the whole text of\u00a0<em>the Critique of Pure Reason<\/em>\u00a0line by line.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The instructor will share the summary material before every classes.
